(Comic) Book Review: PENNY DREADFUL Issue Eight

I made it back to my friendly neighborhood comic shop much sooner this last time than the time before it, when I had to combine two issues of PENNY DREADFUL into one article. While it was cool having two issues to read instead of one, I didn’t want to have to wait so long for the latest installment. (PENNY DREADFUL is always the first comic I read after I’ve made the trip to the aforementioned comic book store, ranking even ahead of the latest issue of Batman or Spider-Man.) When last we left off, Vanessa’s corpse was still possessed by Lucifer, Ethan had reunited with Lily, Sir Malcolm was a ghost, Belial had been given the boot, and the decision was made to seek out Dracula to help in the fight against Lucifer. And now we are all caught up. So what happens this issue? Here are my thoughts, in no particular order:

I don’t think even Dorian Grey knows whose side he’s on. He’s waiting to see who looks likeliest to win. Ethan found out it was Frankenstein who brought Lily back, but had no chance to really process it. Revelations like this only underscore why the series was never meant to end when it did. (John Logan lied!) This comic series, THIS IS THE FOURTH SEASON that we should have been given. “Get Lily to safety!” Ethan tells Dorian, or something like that. Shyeah, like she needs protecting. She was able to throw the Monster around! And apparently Jekyll has transitioned to Hyde and no one noticed. No change in appearance at all. That’s an interesting spin. And Hyde is seriously bad-ass! But he isn’t subject to Lucifer’s influence at all. Most interesting, indeed. Lastly, eight issues in–where the blue hell is the Monster?!
