Catching up on AMERICAN HORROR STORY: 1984

A few episodes in, and I’m having a good time thus far. I wouldn’t advise playing a drinking game wherein you take a shot every time a Slasher movie cliché occurs onscreen, though. You’d likely expire of alcohol poisoning. Understand that these clichés are *supposed* to be there, as AMERICAN HORROR STORY is and always has been a satire. They’re parodying Slasher tropes, thus they need to show us a lot of Slasher tropes.

The latest episodes have shown us that nurse Rita (Angelica Ross in a role that surely would have gone to Angela Bassett had the latter chosen to return to the series) is really a heel herself, a psycho shrink working in tandem with serial killer Mr. Jingles. I wonder how many viewers got that her interaction with Mr. Jingles, in which she blamed his murder spree on pornography, was riffing on “Christian” demagogue James Dobson, leader of the hate group Focus on the Family, who met with Ted Bundy shortly before Bundy’s execution and concluded that all Bundy’s crimes were the result of his exposure to nekkid pictures of women? And the creepy “Christian” wackjob camp counselor is really the killer? No surprises there. And what about that throwdown between the two killers? My money was on Jingles the whole time. Dude has a height and weight advantage.

So far, so good. Let’s just hope 1984 doesn’t pull a CULT on us and fizzle out.

One downside of this season? I’m really missing the FRIDAY THE 13th franchise. Hurry back to us, Jason!
