Book review: THE CORPSEWOOD MANOR MURDERS by Amy Petulla

I met Amy Petulla a couple’a three months back, when I visited her business, Chattanooga Ghost Tours, in search of the elusive head of the Sugar Flats Road Monster. She and I hit it off immediately, and despite her, I am sure, having better things to do, she offered me her full hospitality and answered all my questions. She even shared with me a few of her favorite ghost stories. That’s how I first learned about the murders at Corpsewood Manor in northern Georgia.

Two men, both gay, both practicing Satanists, both into experimentation with drugs (and sharing those drugs with any likeminded individual who happened to pass their way), one of whom was a retired college professor, built a “castle” in the remote Trion wilderness. There they were set upon and murdered by some local hooligans. The murders, though, as tragic as they were, only served as the preamble to a tale of epic strangeness centered in the area. Charles Scudder, the college professor, claimed to have summoned a demon to protect his residence. If it was there, it didn’t do anything to help Scudder and his friend when they were killed. Still, there are those, including no-nonsense types like police officers, who would swear that it was there–and some who suspect it still is. (Others have sighted, and even conversed with, the two victims, as well.)

Ms. Petulla’s book is a fascinating combination of True Crime narrative and southern gothic ghost story, dripping with local color and insidiously creepy. This naturally earns it my highest possible recommendation.
