Book Giveaway and Interview with Author Karen Kincy!

I have a double dose of awesome for you today Dear Readers – an interview with a great author AND a book giveaway (details below)! Woo! I got the chance to chat with author Karen Kincy on her werewolf book Bloodborn and she was kind enough to offer a copy of her book to one lucky reader. Check it out!

Can you tell us a little about your book Bloodborn?
Voila! The blurb:

Brock Koeman lost his brother to werewolves. Now he’s in danger of losing himself. Bitten by a werewolf at sixteen, he fights the transformation, taking the excruciating pain as a punishment for his mistakes. With the help of a risky drug called Lycanthrox, he’s managed to stay human for two full moons. But he knows he can’t last much longer.

Hungry for revenge, Brock vows to kill the silver wolf who bit him. But Brock’s ex, the fiery Cynthia Lopez, still cares about him enough not to let him do anything suicidally dangerous—never mind that Cyn gets her thrills from danger herself. Together again, the heat between them rekindles, but Brock feels like a beast beside her beauty. He can’t stay with her; he can’t ignore the werewolves howling outside his window. When he hunts down the pack, Cyn doesn’t sit on the sidelines. She’s right beside him as they get taken hostage and start running with the werewolves, the police hot on their tails. Brock has to get a grip on who he truly is—before the wolf within kills him, or someone else does.

How does Bloodborn differ from other novels about werewolves?
“With Bloodborn, Karen Kincy opens a frightening new chapter in the werewolf legacy. Brilliant, dark, and filled with haunting images. Highly recommended.” — Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Rot & Ruin and King of Plagues

Or, if you would like my own opinion, I believe Bloodborn stands out from the pack, pun intended, because it’s not a romance novel. So much paranormal nowadays, especially young adult, revolves around romance with a dash of danger. While Bloodborn does have some good old-fashioned kissy scenes, at heart it’s the story of a conflicted werewolf trying to carve out a new identity. I like to think of it as a coming-of-age adventure novel.

What inspired you to write about werewolves?
Well, my two sisters and I used to run around our backyard at night and howl at the moon. Just saying. I’m sure our neighbors thought something was up.

What is one thing you would like people to take away from their experience of reading Bloodborn?
To dream of slipping into a wolfish body, and running beneath the moon in the mountains…

If werewolves were discovered to exist today, do you think our society would accept them or try to destroy them?
I should point out that in the world of Bloodborn, werewolves aren’t the only paranormal people. This is an alternate America where werewolves, fairies, tree-spirits, and even centaurs live side-by-side—and everyone knows it. Society has changed irreversibly since paranormals, or Others, came out of the closet. But Others still face prejudice, fear, and hatred from those who wish they would disappear back into the shadows. So yes, I believe many in our society would accept werewolves, but equally many would try to destroy them.

Who’s your favorite fictitious werewolf (other than your own)?
Vivian from Annette Curtis Klause’s Blood and Chocolate. She’s such a sexy badass. But not in that painted-on latex bodysuit sort of way; she’s also a sixteen-year-old girl who still has a lot to figure out. Like, should she fall in love with a human, or consider him a “meat boy” like the rest of her pack does? When she keeps blacking out, and dead bodies start showing up, is her obvious assumption the truth…?

What is your favorite werewolf book, movie and/or show?
I could just say Blood and Chocolate again, but recently I’ve been watching Grimm, and I love the werewolf named Monroe—aka blutbad, since this is a world of Grimm’s fairy tales. He’s a cello-playing clockmaker who has mostly tamed his wolfish side. While he usually comes across as this mild-mannered stubbly dude, sometimes the fangs come out.

Tell our readers why they should check out your book – in 3 words: (bwahaha)
“It isn’t working.” – the first 3 words from the book. And that’s all I’m teasing you with. (evil laugh)

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
Bloodborn (Flux, 2011) is the second book in the Other series, which started with Other (2010) and will be continued by Foxfire (2012). Each of these books follows in chronological order, but they are standalones, so feel free to skip around. The blurb for Foxfire:

One winter long ago, Tavian Kimura watched his mother—a kitsune, or Japanese fox-spirit—leave him in the snow for the dogs. But that’s a memory buried beneath eleven years, and he has lived most of his life in America with his adoptive family and his girlfriend, Gwen.

Now he’s back. All it took was an invitation to spend New Year’s with his grandparents, and Tavian finds himself in Tokyo with Gwen by his side. It should be a time of celebration, but it becomes a time of nightmares. A faceless ghost haunts Tavian, warning him that “she” is coming. A gang of inugami—fiercely loyal dog-spirits—wants him dead. Why? The inugami believe he strongly resembles one of their most hated enemies, a kitsune named Yukimi.

Is Yukimi the mother who abandoned him? Tavian never knew her true name. He doesn’t even know his own true name, the key to a kitsune’s magic. And soon his untrained magic threatens to kill him, straining his half-human body. Tavian realizes that finding his mother might be the only way to find answers, before it’s too late.

Keep an eye out for Foxfire on October 8 of this year!
