BLACKMANE Chapter 35

From the diary of Maribelle Tate:

God, please tell me we did the right thing.

I know Judith knows what she’s talking about. She says he would have died for sure if it hadn’t been for us, and I believe her. But the irony! We set out to warn BM so he can get away from Phil Hamm, the great fat hunter, and instead we end up delivering him to Hamm on a silver platter. Put a little garnish on the side; here he is.

I’ve cried all morning. Watching them, the way they treated BM. Put him in a hut and barricaded the door, even though Judith had already given him a heavy dose and he was out cold. Then the reinforcements arrived from Nairobi, all so high-tech, with a cage on the back of a truck! At least the doctors with them brought some medical supplies.

Judith says we’re lucky BM didn’t bleed to death. It wasn’t like she could give him a transfusion. No other living thing on the planet has his blood type. The best she could do was pull out her sewing kit and stitch up the worst of the wounds. That and she had a little something for infection. The rest had to wait until the “experts” got here. They told Judith she’d kept him alive, and what a superb job she’d done, given her limited resources, then brushed her aside like some little kid getting in the way. Let the big boys do their work now, little lady. We’ll take it from here.

The Warumbi wanted to kill him. Phil Hamm threatened to shoot any man, woman, or child who went near the hut. I think he would’ve done it, too. The Warumbi must have believed him.

You know they said BM killed four lions. They found the carcasses. That convinced the Warumbi more than ever that he’s a demon. They say he even kills his own kind. Judith said it looked like the lions had attacked BM first. Not sure how she could tell.

So we saved his life. But at what cost?
