Ben Cooper Is Coming Back!
This is big news to all us Monsterkidz of a certain demographic, those of us old enough to remember the glory days of Halloween costumes and little rubber action figures. The “Ben Cooper” company made both, and they were inexpensive, flimsy works of art. No, Art! Capital “A” Art. When I was a wee bairn, before I ever started school, we’d go into this little five-and-dime shop every week and my parents would buy me a Ben Cooper “jiggler,” a rubber action figure. I remember I had one of the Mummy, the Wolfman, an ape soldier from PLANET OF THE APES, Jaws (I mean, “the Shark”), King Kong, and I’m sure a lot more I can’t remember. I was little and destructive, with no concept of collectibility, so it was a fun game for me to pull the arms, legs, and heads off the figures and rearrange them, getting my Mom to sew them onto new torsos. I dearly wish I still had those figures, in their per-surgical states.
Ben Cooper also made Halloween costumes. Every year I’d get a new one for that special night. My favorite was a King Kong costume, one released to coincide with the release of the new movie in the late 70s.
Ben Cooper is making a comeback. The company has a fascinating history, and an important one. It literally changed the face of Halloween. It is a pop culture phenomenon, and those of us who love it never forgot about it. Our amour never cooled.
Hey, Ben, any chance you’re gonna be re-releasing all those little jiggler figures? Please?
