Neil Marshall, the guy who gave us DOG SOLDIERS and THE DESCENT, two of the best Horror movies of the past two decades, is working on a new flick entitled THE LAIR. I’m in, already. This guy’s resume sells it for me. And the title. And the fact that it’s described by him as a “return” for him to those kind of movies.
Said Marshall: “I’m making something scary as hell, pulse-pounding and great fun. This is a crowd pleaser. An adrenaline-pumping roller-coaster ride. Spectacular and loud; inspired by classic genre movies like Aliens, Predator and The Thing and their incredible use of practical creature FX… The story centers on a downed Royal Air Force pilot who escapes a terrifying bunker in Afghanistan containing mutant man-made biological weapons and unwittingly brings the creatures back to a US Army base.” So basically it’s CHUD meets John Carpenter’s THE THING. Sold!
Marshall, you may recall, was the director for the recent poorly-received reboot of HELLBOY, which I enjoyed but did have some problems. I don’t think any of that was his fault, though, or the fault of star David Harbour. I think there was too much creative meddling from the character’s creator, Mike Mignola, among other things. It’ll be nice to have Marshall back working with full creative control over a project he himself creates.
