And Speaking of Box Office…
This time of year always brings lots of fresh genre offerings to movie screens. Sometimes those films are dead on arrival, and sometimes they just ought to be. (Sometimes they ought never to have been made in the first place.) Horror is well represented at the box office right now, but how are the various projects faring? From excellent to really, really poorly, actually. We’ll start with the big loser. HELL FEST is already leaving theaters. It only made some $11 million worldwide. Probably this one should have been a direct-to-video deal. GOOSEBUMPS 2 has unfortunately failed to live up to the numbers set by its predecessor, though ticket sales from overseas should help cushion its fall a bit. THE PREDATOR, which does seem to have suffered from a hatchet job in terms of its editing, which no doubt did its box office performance no good, has raked in $123 million, not too shabby but falling short of what the studio had hoped for.
As for the winners, THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS has been taking the tortoise approach (you know, as in “The Tortoise and The Hare”), slowly climbing its way past $100 million (and probably stealing a portion of the audience for the GOOSEBUMPS sequel in the process). But the big winner, by far, is VENOM. Nobody can touch it. It’s already up to well over $375 million, and it’s only in its second week! (And yes, VENOM *is* a Monster movie. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.)
