So is this good news or bad news? It shouldn’t affect the fans too much in any negative way, unless Amazon insists on shunting all its new acquisitions off to livestreaming instead of going theatrical with them. Otherwise I’d say it’s very good news, indeed, since Amazon has professed the desire to go back to the well, taking advantage of the “Treasure Trove of IP [intellectual properties] in the [MGM] Catalog” it has acquired from the purchase. In addition to the Hobbit movies and the James Bond series, Amazon now owns rights to the Rocky series, the Robocop franchise, the entire Addams Family offerings, the Amityville Horror franchise, the Hannibal Lecter franchise, POLTERGEIST, PUMPKINHEAD, all the CHILD’S PLAY series, and KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, among numerous others. Might we be getting new movies involving many if not most of these franchises? James Bond is a given, but what about a new PUMKINHEAD movie, or a sequel to KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE?
Said MGM: “We are excited for MGM and its bounty of iconic brands, legendary films and television series, and our incredible team and creative partners to join the Prime Video family.” F*ck. That means livestreaming. Imagine my excitement as a balloon, slowly deflating.
