A Second Season of THE TERROR?
There are good ideas and then there are bad ideas. This strikes me as belonging to the latter. There are talks about doing a second season of THE TERROR. This would be problematic enough if taken at face value. Sure, there are numerous ways in which the titular Monster could be resurrected. Monsters NEVER stay dead. They always return for the sequels. But since the show was based on historical fact, and since there were no other expeditions to follow after the doomed Franklin Expedition and its luckless ships the EREBUS and the TERROR, the transition would have to be made to pure fictionalization. Not that this would necessarily be an impediment to Hollywood. But the series wasn’t just based on the historical Franklin Expedition, it was based on the novel by Dan Simmons ABOUT the Franklin Expedition. And Simmons did not write a sequel to that book.
It gets worse, though. They are talking about making it an anthology series, like AMERICAN HORROR STORY. The second season would be an entirely different story. It wouldn’t feature the Arctic Circle or the Tuunbaq at all. Sure, this worked with AHS, but that series wasn’t based on a preexisting work the way THE TERROR was. It sounds like a recipe for some lousy storytelling, but I might be surprised. Ridley Scott is involved, after all. But why keep the title THE TERROR at all? Why not just do a different series with the same people involved?
Then again, given how disappointing the series/season finale ended up being, I think I’d prefer them to bring back the Tuunbaq and have it preying on an Inuit village or something. Have it move south into Canada. Maybe it could run into and do battle with a Wendigo?
(I expect to get paid for the idea if they end up doing that, by the way.)
