According to Bloody Disgusting, who claim the “scoop”, the company Paramount Players is working on a remake of PUMKINHEAD. Should they be, though? I’m conflicted, but right now leaning towards the die of “no”. Why remake a movie that you cannot possibly improve upon? On the other side of the argument, there’s, well, more Pumpkinhead. But will it be the Pumpkinhead we all know and love? As with the movie itself, why would they monkey around with the design? They cannot possibly hope to best Stan Winston’s monster. Anything new they might come up is destined to pale by comparison.
Here’s what they need to do. I’ll offer this advice free of charge. Forget any idea of a remake. Do like they did with HALLOWEEN KILLS, and like they’re doing with THE EXORCIST and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Do a straight sequel to the original, ignoring all the other sequels. Give us a big(ger) budget sequel to the original film, featuring the same creature design. That I wouldn’t have any reservations about. That I, and every other Monsterkid in the world, would celebrate with abandon.
It’s still early in the process, so there’s plenty of time for the creators to realize that a sequel is the way to go. It wouldn’t have to feature any of the characters from the original film. It could be a “different” monster this time, even. As long as it still *looks* like the one Winston created.
