A Cannibal Love Story
Contrary to what the title of this post may have led you to believe, this isn’t about that nutcase who hooked up with another nutcase online a few years ago, in Germany, I think it was, where one had the fetish to eat somebody and the other had the fetish to be killed and eaten. (That’s a whole box of fruit loops, right there!) No, we’re talking about the new “dystopian cannibal love story” from Director Ana Lily Amirpour, a little feature called THE BAD BATCH.
You might recognize that name, Ana Lily Amirpour. Ms. Amirpour is the American (but British-born and of Iranian descent) auteur extraordinaire who wrote and directed one of the finest vampire flicks ever made, 2014’s A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT. Her new project sounds like Romeo and Juliet set in the world of the MAD MAX films, with copious amounts of George Romero thrown in for seasoning. The setting is a future America in which all undesirables are packed off to the desert to survive by cannibalism or whatever. And in this harsh environment, love flowers. Unlike with A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, where I had to wait for the release on video, this one is supposed to get a theatrical release on June 23rd. (Opening against TRANSFORMERS? That sucks.) The only potential downside? Keanu Reeves is in it.
