A werewolf or werwolf, also known as a lycanthrope (from the Greek λυκάνθρωπος: λύκος, lukos, “wolf”, and άνθρωπος, anthrōpos, man), is a mythological or folkloric human with the ability to SHAPESHIFT into a wolf or an anthropomorphic wolf-like creature, either purposely, by being bitten or scratched by another werewolf, or after being placed under a curse.

So actually they are in fact werewolves by definition. If Meyers actually was a little more thorough in Breaking Dawn you would see that the poor girl contradicts her definition about them not being werewolves but shapeshifters-when they are exact same thing. I mean Aro’s explanation about them does in fact just solidify the fact that they are a form of werewolves.

Werewolf=shapeshifter.
Human+shapeshift+wolf=werewolf.

I’m pretty sure Meyers wanted to clear this up when she stated that if she were to make a sequel (not prequel ie Midnight Sun), but sequel, she would make it in Leah Clearwater’s and Nessie’s POV. This is interesting since she said she was done with the whole vampire story and Leah and Nessie are both linked to the whole werewolf story (Leah being a “shapeshifter” and Nessie being Jacobs imprint).
