The Real Top 10 Werewolf Movies

Inspired by the list I made over at Vampires.com, I decided to do the same thing here for all the werewolf fans. You see, while looking up lists of the top ten best vampire and werewolf movies I quickly learned that all of the movies listed were actually the writer’s opinion of the best movies out there. One person’s opinion isn’t good enough for me, so in an effort to find the best werewolf movies I went to IMDB.com and did a search. In order to get the best results I did a search for the highest rated werewolf films, and I made sure that each film had at least five thousand votes, not just one or two.

Here are my findings, a real top ten list of the best werewolf movies, voted by thousands and thousands of people – not just one random writer.

10. The Wolfman (2010) – Rating 6.0/10
This remake didn’t do as well as people had hoped, which is why it’s in the ninth spot on the list.

9. The Howling – Rating 6.5/10
One of the movies that helped spark the werewolf craze in the 80s, it’s no shock that it’s here on the top ten werewolf movie list. About a newswoman who is sent to a rehabilitation center where the inhabitants may not be what they seem.

8. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans – 6.5/10
I was a little sad to see this one so low on the list, but the numbers don’t lie. This Underworld prequel takes a much closer look at the lycan’s past and how the war between them and the vampires began.

7. The Company of Wolves – Rating 6.6/10
I was a little surprised to see that this movie made the list. Based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood, it’s about a young girl who has a strange nightmare about men changing into wolves.

6. Underworld: Evolution – Rating 6.6/10
The second film in the Underworld saga, this one picks up where the first left off and continues the tale of vampires versus werewolves.

5. Dog Soldiers Rating 6.8/10
About a routine military exercise turns into a nightmare in the Scotland wilderness.

4. Underworld – Rating 6.8/10
Hurray Underworld! I love this movie and was sad to see that it didn’t make the vampire list, but it has in fact made the best werewolf movie list with over 60,000 votes. About the war between vampires and lycans, this movie kicks ass!

3. Ginger Snaps – Rating 6.9/10
This twisted film about two morbid goth sisters, one of which who gets bitten by a werewolf, earns your number three spot on the list.

2. The Wolf Man (1941) – Rating 7.4/10
I wasn’t surprised to find this on the list, after all, it’s a classic. About Larry Talbot, who gets bitten by a werewolf when he fights to save Jenny, this is one of the best known werewolf films.

1. An American Werewolf in London – Rating 7.5/10
This 80s flick made the top of the list with over 25,000 votes! About an American tourist in Britain who is attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. Known for its realistic and gruesome transformation scene and special effects, this film continues to be a favorite of many werewolf fans.

There you have it, the real top ten werewolf movies, voted by thousands. Keep in mind that this is a list of the highest rated movies, not the most popular. Which is why none of the Twilight flicks on are here, because while ridiculously popular, they all have terrible ratings.

I’d also like to note that I left the highly rated Harry Potter films off of the list, because while some of them do have a werewolf character, they aren’t strictly speaking werewolf movies.

  2. You forgot “Dog Soldiers”, one of the best damn werewolf movies out there and a 6.8 (with 22,000 votes) which would tie it with “Underworld”. It’s a lesser known title since it came over as a “Sci-Fi original picture”, but it’s definitely deserving of the list.

  4. Now now…. Blood & Chocolate was okay, not the best. Skinwalkers really did need a better script and a lack of “choosen one” to it.

Cursed was alright… far better then other movies that haven’t been mentioned at all.

The Company of Wolves is the only on this list that I haven’t gotten around to seeing yet. But it’s still there on my list.

I think the other thing for script writers to keep in mind is to work more on breaking the mold of Full Moon, Rampaging Werewolf and silver bullet when writing up a story.

  5. Van Helsing is my personal favorite, while skinwalkers did need to lay off the chosen one thing, Blood and Chocolate: book beats movie as bad as rock beats scissors, then again thats the usual case. I have yet to see dog soldiers wich I am pissed off at myself about. Some of the lower class werewolf movies I sincerely think I could have done better myself!

  6. i really dig the list i was surprised to see the company of werewolves acknowledged. I love that some of the common links of these films, besides werewolves, is the use of great make-up/creature effects and graphic transformations. With the popularity of werewolves it can be a little disillusioning for old school fans of werewolf movies and monster make-up to check-out the current werewolf fan community online. Most of the time when i come across sites that discuss werewolves they often are devotes of twilight and have never seen the above listed werewolf films. thanks for such an awesome list, but do wish that the movie Silver Bullet could have made the list.

  7. i disagree with the list ..you forgot a great werewolf movie called “Big Bad Wolf” that movie was a fun werewolf flick with a great wolf design losts of body counts and a new talkin werewolf twist and skinwalkers was good too it could of been better but it should be on the list.. heres my list ..the wolfman (2010), big bad wolf, dog soldiers, the howling, skin walkers, underworld rise of lycans, american werewolf in paris, cursed, silver bullet, wolf, and van helsing for an extra oh and bad moon was a great werewolf movie too if none of you seen that it should be in the top 15 too gingersnaps was horrible that shouldnt be there at all but to all you who havnt seen big bad wolf i highly recommend it its something different and has scares, gore and some real funny moments

    1. Thanks, but I didn’t forget anything :) The list was compiled by votes, which is why many aren’t on here.

  8. Personally I think Red Riding Hood (2011) should of at least made the list. It was a nice rendition of the classic, IMO.

Truth be told though, most werewolf movies aren’t that great for some reason. Werewolf books, on the other hand, tend to be much better.

  9. I personally think Van Helsing is one of the greatest werewolf movies… definitely thought it would be on the list.
