The Gates is a new show on ABC that premiered this summer and so far this supernatural soap opera is faring well, gaining new fans every week.
The show starts out following Nick Monohan and his family, who have moved from Chicago to a quiet, upscale planned community called The Gates, where he will be Chief of Police. They soon realize that their neighbors are not who they appear to be. The Gates is filled with such creatures as vampires, witches, werewolves, and succubi. The parents of The Gates will protect their children from the outside world no matter what.
I have seen all kinds of reviews on this show, opinions are pretty mixed. You’ve got those that absolutely love it, saying that they love the wide assortment of characters and all the drama they bring to the story. Adding that the episodes are well-written, the story keeps your attention and the cast is great.
But then others claim that they feel overwhelmed, noting that in just the first episode we met Nick, the new police chief; his wife and kids; vampire couple Claire and Dylan Radcliff; their daughter Emily; Andie, who befriended Nick’s son Charlie; her werewolf boyfriend Brett; dueling witches Peg and Devon, and more. So many characters in just one episode make it a bit difficult to get attached to or relate much to the cast and story. It also gives the show the potential to get a little too complicated, with a plot going in a million directions. I have yet to check the show out, so as of now I’m just going by reviews I have read.
The good thing about this show is, obviously, the werewolves. That gets it some brownie points, right? After hearing The Gates labeled “Desperate Housewives with vampires” I am a little hesitant to give the show a chance, but knowing me I’ll probably check out at least one episode.

I think something cool is going to come in the next episode or so if the trailer is to be believed cause I think something is going to arise between the werewolf and vampire communities. My concern is the werewolves have not totally been seen as sympathetic where the vampires definitely are.
I feel the show started with some good werewolf stuff beginning and being hinted at but the latest has mainly been about werewolves and the new chief’s discovery about them and growing connection.
Sorry I meant the latest was mostly about vampires sorry!!
I have watched it from the beginning and I really like it! I hope ABC keeps it. I would love to see it for the fall.
