The Devils Made Him Do It!

Remember the Florida face-eating psycho killer? Sure you do. His case was especially disturbing to read about because it was that rarity or rarities, a stranger-on-stranger crime. The killer, college student Austin Harrouff, came upon his victims, 59-year-old John Stevens, and his 53-year-old wife, Michelle Mishcon, at random as they were sitting in their garage, minding their own business. He attacked, killed, and partially cannibalized them. At the time, the crime was blamed on his being jacked-up on bath salts or some comparable drug, but he denies it. He instead points the finger at a dark demonic figure he called “Daniel.” That’s the story he tried selling to Dr. Phil, anyway.

Could he be telling the truth? Is he suffering from mental illness, or trying to set up an insanity defense? If it’s the latter, he’ll be disappointed to learn that psychiatric hospitals for the criminally insane are reputed to be worse, at time far worse, than standard prisons. Whatever the case, the prosecutor’s aren’t going to be putting “Daniel” on the stand, accused of murder. Harrouff will have to pay the penalty himself. The devil might have gotten him into this mess, but he won’t get him out of it. Neither will Dr. Phil.
