Well, maybe George and Mitchell aren’t exactly ordinary guys considering that George is a werewolf and Mitchell is a vampire. Oh, and the house they rent together? It just happens to be haunted by a ghost named Annie.

When Mitchell suggests that he and George should rent a house together in the hopes of living like normal humans George is reluctant at first. Stating that he and Mitchell are monsters and therefore could never fit in with normal humans, he is soon convinced to give it a try and falls in love with a house the pair go to look at. Upon moving in strange things begin to happen in the house, most notably a roasting chicken being nailed to the cupboards and the words ‘GET OUT’ scrawled on the walls. It’s not long before the guys discover who is responsible for the mischief, a ghost named Annie who had died in the house after falling down the stairs a year earlier. The house belonged to Annie and her fiancée Owen and after her death Annie could not bear to share the house with the living so she terrorized whomever moved in until they were forced to leave.

When Annie realizes that both George and Mitchell can see her she is absolutely thrilled as it means that she would no longer be alone without people to talk to. Mitchell mentions that the reason Annie can be seen by he and George is because all supernatural creatures such as werewolves, ghosts and vampires are able to recognize each other. At first George isn’t happy about sharing the house with a ghost but Annie soon grows on him. Together the three find comfort in each others company.

When George is confronted one morning after a transformation by a man calling himself Tully he is frightened that Tully plans to expose his secret. Instead Tully offers George some clothes to change into and explains that he too is a werewolf, just like George. George doesn’t believe the stranger and tells him to leave him alone. Instead Tully shows up at the house while Mitchell has visitors from the neighbourhood and makes himself at home. At first both Mitchell and Annie are quite taken by the charming werewolf and invite him to stay at the house despite George’s objections. Mitchell tells George that what he needs is someone who understands what it’s like to be a werewolf and who could teach him how to better cope with his condition.

As the days pass Tully begins to earn George’s trust as he shows George different ways of making his life as a werewolf easier. He shows him how to make a morning after bag complete with change of clothes and wet wipes so that he no longer has to worry about walking home naked and covered in blood after a transformation. Tully also shows George how to trick the wolf part of himself into following the sent of a raw chicken around in circles all night as to keep the werewolf from accidentally stumbling upon people and preying on them. Tully also helps George to overcome his shyness and ‘tricks’ him into talking to a nurse named Nina that he fancied but was too nervous to talk to.

Using the same chauvinistic bravado that Tully uses on the ladies, George is met with an unexpected response when not only does Nina shoot him down, she humiliates him in the process. Tully uses the opportunity to cause a rift between George and Mitchell stating that if Mitchell, an obvious lady killer, was really George’s friend he would have taught him how to talk to women. Tully assures George that there are all sorts of things that Mitchell is keeping from him and that he would never treat George that way. When Tully tries to force himself on Annie, which of course is a stupid thing to do since she’s a ghost, she and Mitchell insist that Tully is no longer welcome and that he has to leave. George refuses to kick Tully out, that is until Tully informs him that it was he that had attacked George in the Scottish Highlands, turning him into a werewolf. Horrified by this revelation George tells Tully to leave him alone, despite Tully’s pleas for forgiveness. Tully claims that he is tired of being alone and that before he was a werewolf he had a family. After Tully tries to hang himself, an act that is prevented when George stumbles upon him before the full moon rises, the two transform and attack each other. In the morning George tells Tully to leave and never return.

When Mitchell steps in and sets up a date between George and Nina, George reluctantly goes along with it. As much as he likes Nina he fears putting her in danger due to the fact that he is a werewolf. The date goes fairly well (despite interruptions from Annie’s fellow ghost friend, Gilbert) until George and Nina try to make love. George is afraid of hurting Nina and decides that making love to Nina is too risky. Nina chalks up George’s inability to preform as impotence and the next night while George tries to make his way to the hospital basement in order to transform, Nina stops him. Hoping to assure George that there are other ways to please a woman that don’t involve sex, George, unable to control himself due to his being on the verge of transformation, grabs Nina and the two of them proceed to have sex.

When Annie discovers that her death was not an accident but that she was actually murdered by Owen she realizes that the reason that she had not ‘crossed over’ was that she needed to make Owen confess to what he had done. When Mitchell meets a young boy named Bernie and accidentally lends him a video of vampire porn all hell breaks lose when Bernie’s mother accuses Mitchell and George of being paedophiles and whips the rest of the neighbourhood into a witch hunting frenzy. When Owen comes around to the house and informs the guys that he is kicking them out due to the controversy in the neighborhood Annie is even more determined to make him pay and George agrees to help her. Together the two devise a plan to frighten Owen into confessing.

George decides that he doesn’t want to get Nina involved in the bad things in his life and breaks up with her. After Bernie is accidentally hit by a car during a riot outside the house, George seeks comfort in Nina’s arms and asks her if she can be happy with him knowing that he has secrets that he is not ready to share with her. Nina shows him horrible scars on her torso, exclaiming that she has secrets of her own. When Mitchell saves Bernie by turning him into a vampire, Bernie’s mother informs the rest of the neighborhood that she was mistaken and that Mitchell was innocent all along. Knowing that their actions caused the death of the little boy they claimed to be protecting the rest of the neighborhood soon begins to try and make amends.

George and Annie put their plan to make Owen confess in motion when George calls Owen over to the house to do some repairs. When Owen arrives he is confronted by Annie who demands that he confess to her murder. Owen’s reaction is not what Annie expects when instead of being afraid of the ghost of his murdered fiancée Owen begins to belittle her. Annie then redoubles her efforts by haunting Owen’s new girlfriend Janie in hopes of warning her of how dangerous Owen is. Janie has a far more normal reaction to seeing a ghost when she freaks out and faints. Annie almost manages to reach Janie when Owen returns home and convinces Janie that Annie is simply a figment of her imagination caused by her guilt over the affair she and Owen were having while Annie was still alive.

After Bernie’s accident Mitchell begins to alienate himself from George and Annie. He begins spending more time with Herrick, the leader of the Bristol vampires and his sire whom he had had a falling out with decades earlier. Herrick has plans to turn the majority of the worlds population into vampires, making them the dominate race. When George is confronted by an old flame of Mitchell’s named Josie who is dying of lung cancer she tells him what the vampires have been planning. She tells George that she had been approached by Herrick at Mitchell’s request and that Herrick had offered to recruit her, making her a vampire so that she will not die. When George asks Josie just how bad the vampires plans are she informs him that Herrick had told her that “No one gets left behind.”

Mitchell stumbles upon a room filled with dying humans that the vampires have been holding captive in order to feed on inside the vampires’ lair underneath the funeral home that they use as a front for their ‘recruitment‘ activities. Horrified, he decides he no longer wants to be part of Herrick’s mad scheme. Mitchell finds himself surrounded by angry vampires and it looks as if there is no way out but thankfully George and Annie show up just in time. With the help of Lauren, a woman Mitchell turned into a vampire after attacking her during a date, the four of them manage to escape.

Back home Annie, Mitchell and George confront Owen together. When Annie informs Owen that there are much worse things than ghosts and implies that George is a werewolf and that Mitchell is a vampire, Owen’s bravado begins to fade. When Annie whispers a secret in his ear, something ‘only the dead know’, Owen goes over the edge completely and runs off. Horrified by what Annie had told him he runs to the nearest police station and confesses to Annie’s murder in hopes of being safely locked away. Having finally been able to confront Owen, Annie’s door to the afterlife comes for her. As the three say their goodbyes there is a knock on the front door. As he answers the door, Mitchell is staked on the doorstep by Herrick who cannot enter the house without being invited.

George manages to push Herrick from the doorstep and pulls Mitchell into the house. Frantically he calls for an ambulance to take Mitchell to the hospital. Annie refuses to enter the door to the afterlife and leave Mitchell behind and instead chooses to go with George and Mitchell. Doctors are able to stabilize Mitchell but are dumbfounded by the fact that they can’t find a heartbeat and that his wounds are healing too quickly. Despite multiple blood transfusions Mitchell is still unable to fully recover since he needs fresh blood to heal. Josie offers to let Mitchell feed from her since she will soon die and hopes that her sacrifice will help Mitchell to stop Herrick.

After Mitchell is discharged from the hospital George learns that Mitchell has confronted Herrick, challenging Herrick to a fight to the death. Mitchell chooses the night of the full moon so that George will not be able to interfere. The only thing Mitchell asks is that if Herrick wins he let George and Annie leave Bristol without being harmed. Herrick agrees even though he has no intention of keeping his word. George convinces Mitchell to allow him to try and talk Herrick out of the fight but instead George informs Herrick that Mitchell will be waiting for him in the abandoned basement of the hospital. What Herrick doesn’t know is that George plans to confront him in the basement during the full moon where he plans to transforms into a werewolf and kill him.

When Mitchell and Annie realize what George has planned they try to stop him but it’s too late. Mitchell tries to talk George out of killing Herrick but George will not be swayed. George insists that the only way for he, Mitchell and Annie to be safe is for him to kill Herrick since he is the only one strong enough to do so. As George begins to transform Nina rushes in not knowing what’s going on. Mitchell and Annie are able to pull her out of the room but not before she is scratched by George. Once George’s transformation is complete he tears Herrick to pieces while Nina watches in shock.

The next morning George confides everything to Nina including how he became a werewolf. Nina chooses not tell George about the scratch from the night before in the hopes that she will not turn into a werewolf herself. Relieved that Herrick is dead Mitchell, George and Annie are hopeful that they can finally go about living ‘normal’ lives. What they don’t know is that there are people out there interested in the three of them and that someone has made contact with Owen who believes Owen’s claims that Annie, George and Mitchell are actually a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire.

DeviantART is holding a werewolf writing contest! I’ve lost count of how many times one of our readers have mentioned that they write werewolf stories, well here’s your chance to show us what you’ve got and win some prizes!

According to the DA news post:

After a long delay, the next official #WerewolvesAtHeart group contest is officially under way!

The contest deviation must be in short story format based upon the writing prompt as outlined below:

“You wake up shackled to a chair and can’t remember how you got there. Two voices are talking. You recognize one of them.”

This prompt is purposefully loose; we decided to encourage as much freedom as possible while at the same time giving enough of a framework to maintain some kind of direction.

The goal of this contest is to create the most interesting werewolf story you can think of. You can use the mood alluded to by the prompt or take it in a completely different direction. The story can be tragic or cheerful, suspenseful or carefree, happen night or day, in the summer or winter, in the city or the forest, in modern times or old, it’s up to you! The more creative and original, the better!

Contest Deadline is August 7, 2010.

As for the prizes, first place gets the choice of a Goldenwolf print (she drew the beautiful picture on the right), a cell-shaded drawing of a character from your story or a 3 month premium membership. Awesome right? For more on the prizes and the rules go HERE.

As a big time deviantART junkie, I absolutely love their contests and I highly recommend that you guys enter in. If you aren’t a member, it’s very easy to join.

Thanks to Werewolf-News.com for bringing this awesome contest to my attention.

We all know the most popular way which involves being bitten by another werewolf. But if you take a look at folklore, old customs and traditions throughout the world you’ll learn that there are several ways someone was believed to turn into a werewolf. A warning though, many of these ideas came from the middle ages, a time when people believed in most anything, so some things on this list may be a bit ridiculous.

A new werewolf flick, 13Hrs, will be premiering August 28 at the UK’s most amazing horror film festival Film4 FrightFest.

“A full moon hangs in the night sky and lightning streaks across dark storm clouds. Sarah Tyler returns to her troubled family home in the isolated countryside, for a much put-off visit. As the storm rages on, Sarah, her family and friends shore up for the night, cut off from the outside world. But something comes out of the driving rain and darkness. Something that holds a dark secret so devastating that, in one night, it could wipe out the entire family.

Trapped, Sarah and her brothers and friends must use their heads as well as their physical strength to survive not only the thing that is hunting them down one by one – but their own entrapment as the besieged group turns in on itself. Can they survive the horror stalking them? Or is their enemy already amongst them and has it always been? Can they survive for 13 hours?’

That’s right boys and girls, a horror movie starring ferocious werewolves – none of that angsty romantic werewolf nonsense. Here’s hoping the movie is a big hit, if it is then there will be a better chance of it coming over to the States.

From the Press Release:

“This year there are eight British films in the main programme (another record) including MONSTERS, Gareth Edwards’ sensational post-Apocalyptic debut, The Ford Brothers’ Cannes-hyped African Zombie flick THE DEAD and Johannes Roberts F – in which a school gets a lesson in horror! Other home-grown titles are DEAD CERT (East-End gangsters meet Eastern European vampires), ISLE OF DOGS (nasty gangland horror), Paul Andrew Williams’ harrowing CHERRY TREE LANE and werewolf thriller 13HRS. Plus, Jake West will be presenting his in-depth documentary VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE, which will be followed by a Q & A panel discussion.”

Man, I wish I could go to Film4 FrightFest.

In Norway it was once believed that certain people could assume the form of a wolf or a bear. But, the ability to transform was usually a curse put on them by the Trollmen, or that it was the trolls themselves that were the shapeshifters. Here’s an old legend about trolls, werewolves and a curse.

In a hamlet deep in a forest, there dwelt a cottager named Lasse, and his wife. One day he went out in the forest to chop down a tree, unfortunately he had forgotten to cross himself and say his paternoster (prayer) to ward off trolls, and so poor Lasse was transformed into a wolf by a wicked troll.

His wife mourned him for many long years, but, one Christmas-eve, a very poor and ragged beggar-woman came to the door, and the sympathetic wife of the house took her in, fed her well, and treated her kindly. Right before she left, the beggar-woman said to the wife that she would probably see her husband again, that he was not dead, but was wandering in the forest as a wolf.

Towards nightfall the wife went to her pantry to place a piece of meat in it for the next day, when, on turning to go out, she saw a wolf standing before her. The wolf raised itself with its paws on the pantry steps and regarding her with sorrowful and hungry look. Seeing this she exclaimed, “If I were sure that thou wert my own Lasse, I would give thee a bit of meat.” At that very moment the wolf-skin fell off and her husband stood before her in the clothes he wore on the unlucky morning when she saw him last.

This is perhaps one of my favorite werewolf tales, since it’s the only one I have heard of that involves wicked trolls.

Who knew, we have our own month! Weird too, consider that this is actually a month of a few of the shortest nights in the year. Well, that’s okay, we’re still flattered. Monster Librarian offers reviews for some of the newest werewolf books of the last year, and plus, interviews with new authors, –and that not it, –they also have short stories available, about werewolves of course, by up-and-coming new authors. They’re also hosting a lot of gorgeous werewolf art by Jerrod Brown.

“This year on top of featuring new reviews of werewolf fiction we are hosting new werewolf short stories and interviews. We start off with Colleen Wanglund reviewing “Animal Behavior and other Tales of Lycanthropy” by Keith Gouviea. Michele Lee interviews Silver Kiss author Naomi Clark. We are pleased to be hosting two tales of lycanthropy: Mind, Body, and Soul by Keith Gouviea and Men in the Moon by Michele Lee. Stay tuned for more updates as part of Werewolf Month.

Also if you are interested in other horror book reviews we are also running our Hazy Days of Horror book review project. This summer we are partnering with HorrorWorld, Hellnotes, and Horror Fiction Review to bring you reviews of horror titles available for your summer reading.”

Awesome, because I’m desperate for some new horror titles featuring werewolves. I think the last great werewolf book I read was Blood and Chocolate. The movie was horrible, but the book was incredibly touching and emotional. Well, actually, I also read The Talisman, which has a werewolf, and it was a scary one too. It’s hard to make a werewolf scary, but Stephen King has those skills. So if you get a chance, check out the reviews at Monster Librarian, –I’ll be looking for some werewolf horror myself!

Jacob Black is the hottest werewolf according to almost every American female between the ages of 10 and 16, so, we were SO surprised when we stumbled across this article, in the San Francisco Chronicle, claiming there were werewolves cooler than Jacob Black! What is this madness!? And one of them is -barely contained snicker here- Scott Howard, –played by Michael J. Fox. Okay, all right, there are probably many movie werewolves who are cooler than Jacob Black, but Teen Wolf isn’t one of them. And he’s no where near as hot. If MJF took his shirt off and offered to let me use it, I’d probably just die of hypothermia in the road. Not to say he isn’t a great guy; he’s just not a very attractive, or cool guy.

But, the writer was spot on with a few other werewolves:

“Daniel “Oz” Osbourne (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”)

Oz fights to suppress his werewolf nature, but he’s definitely not above eating baddies when necessary. He’s also the master of understated cool. [Plus, it's frigging Seth Green! Duh!]

Ginger Fitzgerald (“Ginger Snaps”)

Where are all the lady werewolves at? Ginger’s change coincides with puberty, bringing new meaning to “hair where there was no hair before.”

Will Randall (“Wolf”)

Like Lucian, Will is made infinitely more interesting by the actor who portrays him. In this case, it’s Jack Nicholson, who’s been cool way longer than Jacob Black’s been alive.

Laurie (“Trick ‘r Treat”)

Alas, this gives away one of the film’s most fun twists, so stop reading now if you haven’t seen “Trick ‘r Treat.” Spoiler alert: Anna Paquin’s Laurie makes a shocking transition from shy virgin to bloodthirsty werewolf.”

Laurie from Trick ‘r Treat is definitely the coolest werewolf I’ve seen in forever; and her sexy friends are pretty hot too. Alcide Herveaux was actually on this list, but I don’t think he’s really proven himself so far as ‘cooler than Jacob Black’. But when he does, I’ll certainly add him to the list. Until then, let’s keep this fair!

Hell yea, True Blood isn’t all about the vampires now, season three is packed full of kickass werewolves! In a recent interview he did, Joe Manganiello spoke about the classic battle between vampires and werewolves.

“As far as brute strength goes, the vampires are kind of agreed upon as being super strong, especially the ones that are thousands of years old,” Joe said. “You get into this super, ancient strength. But from there, there are werewolves that can take out vampires.”

Joe said that his very own character of Alcide Hevreaux, introduced in the True Blood episode “It Hurts Me Too,” is a werewolf that could hold his own against the vampires.

“That was important for me in creating Alcide,” said Joe. “A vampire can get away with being pale, thin and skinny but still being powerful. Werewolves have to look like animals — really big, strong animals. I wanted Alcide to be as powerfully built as possible so you would see him and think that he could take out a vampire. I think throwing him into an arena, you would have a pretty good fight between the vampires and the werewolves.”

You may be wondering about the shapeshifters, like Sam. Joe said that it all depends on the specific shifter, but for the most part they would fall somewhere behind the vampires and the werewolves – something that I’m sure Marshall and Sam would disagree with.

“Depending on the shapeshifter, they’ll come in some place afterward,” he said. “But werewolves are generally thought of as being the strongest of the shapeshifters. Probably the most egotistical, too!”

What do you think True Blood fans? Who do you think would win If the vampires, werewolves and shapeshifters all went at it?

Many have claimed to have seen a werewolf before, but was it really a werewolf, or some other kind of shapeshifter – like the Chindi.

The chindi is a Navajo shapeshifter that acts as a kind of avenging angel to those people that disrespect any of the Earth Mother’s creatures. According to Navajo artist David Little Turtle, “it can assume any shape, or, perhaps more accurately, it can inhabit any living thing. Almost any traditional Navajo has at least one chindi story to tell. He or she will tell you about coming home at night and seeing a coyote walking on its hind legs.”

You may automatically assume that seeing wolf walking upright like a human would make it a werewolf, but according to Navajo tradition, it’s probably a chindi. Another way to identify a chindi is by the eyes, they will appear dead. If your headlights hit the animal’s eyes and they do not reflect the light, then you know it’s a chindi.

Should you worry about the chindi coming after you? Well, it depends on your attitude toward the Earth Mother and whether or not you have a good heart.

Now, if a chindi is set against you, the only way you can stop it is to draw a medicine circle around you and sing or say a prayer for protection. Little Turtle says, “It need not be a Navajo chant. Sing or say aloud any prayer you know. The important thing is your attitude. If the chindi sees that you have a good heart, the evil energy will boomerang and return to the one that set it upon you.”

But what if you don’t know how to draw a medicine circle for protection? What if you panic and can’t think of a prayer? Can you instead stop the chindi with a silver bullet? Well, Little Turtle says that no bullet can stop a chindi. “If you kill the host animal, the chindi will simply enter another animal. And another and another… until it has worked its vengeance upon you.”

So what have we learned today? That a strange-acting wolf may not be a werewolf, but instead a chindi. And, that you should always show respect for the earth and its creatures – otherwise a chindi may come after you.

Unfortunately, its page on IMDB had absolutely no useful information – lame. But, if you’re a big fan of werewolf books then you may have heard of this title before, since it’s a popular book by Martin Millar. I may be getting ahead of myself, but I’m going to assume that the movie is perhaps based on the book of the same title.

Martin Millar’s Lonely Werewolf Girl is about a teenage girl named Khalix MacRinnalch. She is the youngest daughter of the Thane, which makes her royalty among her clan of Scottish werewolves. She has been on the run in London ever since she attacked (and nearly killed) her father for banishing her lover Gawain. Her oldest brother, Sarapen wants to kill her to avenge the attack on their father. All while her mother and brother Markus try to take control of the MacRinnalch clan from Sarapen. Then you’ve got Khalix’s sister Thrix, a werewolf enchantress and couturier for fashion-obsessed fire-elemental warrior queen Malveria. Oh yea.

“This complex romp features scores of characters, multiple races, enchanting fashion trappings, business, family dynamics, music, sex, enduring love, romance, business, eating disorders, drug addiction, back-alley fights, epic battles, politics, and, most prominently, the contrary nature of werewolves, not to mention 236 (!) chapters. And it’s so compelling you don’t want to it end. The grungy, gory, glorious world that World Fantasy Award winner Millar has created is unforgettable.” -Diana Tixier Herald

This book definitely has movie potential, but if it’s really this book that will be made into a movie has yet to be confirmed. Honestly though, I think it would be better as a TV show, seeing how incredibly complicated the storyline and characters are. It’s doubtful that a movie would be able to do it justice.

I suppose all we can do for now is wait and see, there’s a chance the Lonely Werewolf Girl movie has absolutely nothing to do with the book.
