Jacob Black’s Competition for Coolest Werewolf

Jacob Black is the hottest werewolf according to almost every American female between the ages of 10 and 16, so, we were SO surprised when we stumbled across this article, in the San Francisco Chronicle, claiming there were werewolves cooler than Jacob Black! What is this madness!? And one of them is -barely contained snicker here- Scott Howard, –played by Michael J. Fox. Okay, all right, there are probably many movie werewolves who are cooler than Jacob Black, but Teen Wolf isn’t one of them. And he’s no where near as hot. If MJF took his shirt off and offered to let me use it, I’d probably just die of hypothermia in the road. Not to say he isn’t a great guy; he’s just not a very attractive, or cool guy.

But, the writer was spot on with a few other werewolves:

“Daniel “Oz” Osbourne (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”)

Oz fights to suppress his werewolf nature, but he’s definitely not above eating baddies when necessary. He’s also the master of understated cool. [Plus, it's frigging Seth Green! Duh!]

Ginger Fitzgerald (“Ginger Snaps”)

Where are all the lady werewolves at? Ginger’s change coincides with puberty, bringing new meaning to “hair where there was no hair before.”

Will Randall (“Wolf”)

Like Lucian, Will is made infinitely more interesting by the actor who portrays him. In this case, it’s Jack Nicholson, who’s been cool way longer than Jacob Black’s been alive.

Laurie (“Trick ‘r Treat”)

Alas, this gives away one of the film’s most fun twists, so stop reading now if you haven’t seen “Trick ‘r Treat.” Spoiler alert: Anna Paquin’s Laurie makes a shocking transition from shy virgin to bloodthirsty werewolf.”

Laurie from Trick ‘r Treat is definitely the coolest werewolf I’ve seen in forever; and her sexy friends are pretty hot too. Alcide Herveaux was actually on this list, but I don’t think he’s really proven himself so far as ‘cooler than Jacob Black’. But when he does, I’ll certainly add him to the list. Until then, let’s keep this fair!

Taylor Lautner Dishes on Kissing Kristen Stewart & More

As every team Jacob fan knows, June 30 is the big day, the day The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits theaters! But out of all the amazing scenes in the flick, there is one above all others that fans are dying to see – Bella and Jacob’s kissing scene. Since we still have a few weeks to go before we can see the big kiss, all we can do is read about what Taylor Lautner (aka Jacob Black) has to say about the kiss, as well as his thoughts on hating Edward.

The interview started out by asking Taylor the big question – what it was like filming the kissing scene with Kristen Stewart.

“As soon as we finished, as soon as we pulled away and they called cut, she’d look at me and I’d look at her and there would be a moment of silence, and she would go… ‘We just kissed!’ It’s definitely interesting but when we film, we become Jacob and Bella.”

All I hope if is a sexy kissing scene, there better not be any painful looks on his face like when Edward kisses Bella (which makes me cringe every time I see it). Anyway, Taylor then went on to discuss vampire Edward and werewolf Jacob’s battle for Bella’s human heart, a battle in which, as we all know, Edward wins in the end.

“[Jacob] becomes a little frustrated, because he always gets so close — he kisses her this time!” he said. “He becomes as close as you can get and still gets told no. It’s a tough situation; I definitely would not want to be in it.”

Taylor may have thought that kissing real-life friend Kristen was weird, but according to him the scenes he has with Robert Pattinson were even harder.

“One of the most challenging things about filming this was having to hate Edward, because I’m looking at Rob and it was difficult,” Taylor explained. “Every time we’d have a shouting match or he’d grab me on the shoulder or something, as soon as they called cut, we’d bust out laughing. Or we’d ruin plenty of takes.”

Wouldn’t you love to see them messing up scenes like that? I hope the Eclipse DVD has bloopers on it with just those.

Who Is Your Favorite Twilight Werewolf?

With Eclipse coming to theaters soon (June 30), Twilight fever is coming back in full force. As usual, most websites focus on the vampires in the series, but here at Werewolves.com we’ve got Twilight’s wolf pack on our minds. Which brings us today’s question, who is your favorite werewolf in the Twilight Saga?

The Twilight Saga Werewolves:

Jacob Black: The main werewolf in the series. Jacob is Bella’s best friend and one of her love interests. He is a Quileute Native American that is described as a lanky 6’2″ fifteen-year-old with hair down to his shoulders in Twilight. By Eclipse, Jacob stands at 6’7″ and is all sexy muscle. As a wolf, Jacob’s fur is described as reddish-brown. He is also sweet and cheerful, yet hotheaded. After Edward leaves Bella in New Moon, the lost Bella spends most of her time with Jacob. In the third book, Eclipse, Jacob spends almost the entire book trying to win over Bella.

Sam Uley: Sam is another Quileute werewolf. He is the Alpha of his pack and is engaged to Emily Young. When he phases, he is pure black and the largest wolf, until Breaking Dawn when Jacob becomes the biggest. Before becoming a wolf, he was dating Leah Clearwater, but their relationship fell apart after his transformation because he was forbidden to tell her. Eventually Sam imprinted on Leah’s second cousin, Emily and broke all the promises he made to Leah. According to Jacob, Sam feels responsible for the bitter person Leah has become.

Paul: Paul is most hot-blooded member of the pack; he became so infuriated when he learned Jacob told Bella about the pack that he turned into a wolf, ready to attack her. But later he seems to have no ill feelings towards Bella or Jacob. He is prone to angry outbursts, which causes him to shift into his dark gray wolf form.

Jared: In Eclipse, Jared imprints on Kim, a girl he sat next to in school. Before he was a werewolf he never paid any attention to her, but after his transformation he looked at her once and imprinted. In wolf form, he has short but thick brown fur.

Collin and Brady: I’m going to group these two together since there isn’t much about either due to them not being in the series much. Collin and Brady are the youngest wolves in the pack. They did not follow Jacob when he left the pack, but instead stayed since they were the pups of the tribe and didn’t know whether to leave or not.

Leah Clearwater: She is the only known female werewolf in the history of the Quileute tribe. In her wolf form she is the fastest and Edward describes her as a “smaller grey wolf.” Leah is portrayed as angry and bitter due to her broken heart. She has short temper and often uses the pack’s mental connection to remind the other werewolves of things they would rather forget. But later on, after joining Jacob’s pack, she matures greatly.

Seth Clearwater: Seth is Leah’s younger brother. In wolf form, he has sandy brown-colored fur. Bella remarks that Seth reminds her of a young Jacob. In Breaking Dawn he develops an unlikely friendship with Edward, and attends his and Bella’s wedding. Seth is one of the only werewolves to completely comfortable being around the Cullen family. He also has, according to Edward, very pure and honest thoughts, which the Cullens love, especially Edward.

Embry Call: Embry is a wolf with gray fur and dark spots on his back, and is another one of Jacob’s best friends. He is the werewolf that likes to call Bella “vampire girl” for hanging out with the Cullens. Embry is quieter than some of the other boys on the Reservation, a bit on the shy side. He is playful, but reserved.

Quil Ateara: Quil is a bit different than most of the other pack members since he was actually happy about becoming a wolf, because it allowed him to join his friends and understand what was going on. As a wolf, Quil has chocolate-brown fur. Quil imprints on Emily’s two-year-old niece, Claire. Although this seems really creepy, Jacob explains that there is currently nothing romantic about his feelings, and that Quil will be whatever Claire needs him to be at each point in her life, whether it be a brother, friend, protector, or lover.

New Twilight Director’s Letter to Fans!

Good news Team Jacob fans! This past weekend, director Bill Condon broke his silence on Breaking Dawn, the upcoming movie adaptation of the fourth novel in the Twilight series. Just like previous directors Chris Weitz and David Slade, the director introduced himself to the Twi-hards with an online letter, reassuring them that he will do his best to make the Breaking Dawn movie as perfect as the book.

Bill Condon’s letter to fans:

Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,

I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I’m stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you’ve probably heard, I’ve been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit – who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.

I’m pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I’ve read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine’s and Chris’s movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine’s notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz’s companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk – a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for “newborn” status in the universe you’ve been living inside for a few years now, but a guy’s gotta start somewhere.

Like many of you, I’ve always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn’t been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I’ve been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.

The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don’t think it’s difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy – and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.

I’m a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?

I hope that this will be the first of many occasions I’ll get to check in with you as we set to work bringing BREAKING DAWN to the screen. Werewolves Kick Vampire Ass In New Eclipse Trailer

Get ready Twilight lovers! The small town of Forks is about to be overrun with a vampire army, and the blood will flow! Thank to the werewolves.

In the new Eclipse trailer, which recently premiered on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), are forced to put their differences aside for a bit to take down the ruthless Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her newborn vampire army.

The newest Eclipse trailer really shows the darker tone that was evident in The Twilight Saga’s third book – there’s more action, more drama and more bloody chaos. The trailer gives us a first look at Victoria’s ferocious vampire army – including her right-hand-man Riley, played by newcomer to the Twilight flicks, Xavier Samuel.

Most importantly, the werewolf fans also get a small look at the epic battle between the werewolves and vampires, which as all you guys know, brings the Cullens and Jacob’s pack together against one common enemy. We get to see a small but kickass glimpse of the werewolves battling it out against the naughty newborn vamps, which you have to admit, looks awesome!

But the big thing the trailer doesn’t show is the one thing nearly all Twilight fans want to see – the kiss! You guys know exactly what kiss I am talking about. Anyone else as excited as I am for that one scene? Eeee!

Even though Eclipse doesn’t hit theaters until June 30 (sooo long!), the fans can look forward to the May 13 episode of Oprah’s talk show, when Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will all be paying a visit. Woo!

So what do you guys think of the new trailer? Are you looking forward to this flick more than the past Twilight movies? Personally I am way more excited about this one than I was for the last two, probably because of the kiss and the fact that we get to see way more wolf action.

The Big Werewolf War in Eclipse: Sneak Peek!

Yeah yeah, I know werewolf fans everywhere are usually aghast at the idea of werewolves in the Twilight Saga, but hey, –I’ve seen it, and I’m impressed, personally. Though, they aren’t really werewolves as we traditionally see them; they’re sort of shapeshifters. The werewolves in Twilight are a little similar to the whole shapeshifter culture that you might encounter in True Blood; ‘shifters’ dislike werewolves, in True Blood. While in the Twilight Saga, the werewolves are really just larger than life wolves. While on one hand, it’s nice to see more “wolf” in the creature, it’s easy to see how horror lovers want more gore, and less lore.

There’s a new sneak preview of the Eclipse film out there, driving Team Jacob crazy. Don’t bother searching Google, –the most popular video result is only about three minutes long. We have one that’s almost seven minutes long.

As for the question posed in Celebs-Gather, over who Bella will choose, –pretty much everyone who watches the movies has read the series about nine million times. And his name is “Taylor Lautner”, Lautner being the surname. Duh. But kudos for having the awesome video.

The longer video has more cast input from Eclipse, more scenes from the film, and more behind the scenes footage as well; the post in Celebs-Gather also includes a deleted scene from New Moon, –though, it kind of sucks. There was like, a solid 60 seconds of totally unnecessary conversation. Kind of easy to see why it was deleted in the first place. The DVD issued from Target includes a ton of extra features, including deleted scenes, and a bunch of other featurettes, while Best Buy competes with.. packaging.

Fans of 30 Days of Night will appreciate the next film in the saga a bit more knowing that the director of 30 Days, David Slade, has taken on Eclipse, and plans to turn it into a much more violent, action packed film than its predecessors.

Do Werewolves Need a Little More Girl Power?

When talking about werewolves, we usually have the tendency to refer to them in the masculine sense. “He changed” or “the werewolf licked his wounds” are common phrases found in werewolf history. But what about all the women? Very little is said about female werewolves, especially in a historical sense, and even when they are mentioned, very few are given a name such as the “She-Wolf.” In fact, if you had to think of a few historical women werewolves, would you be able to name any except for this most infamous lady wolf?

What’s even more interesting is not only the fact that there are little to no women werewolves found in history, but that history doesn’t mind blaming women for turning men into wolves. Often it was a witch that would turn a man into a wolf or, it was sometimes the succession of birth that would turn a boy into a werewolf – as though it was the mother’s fault for not having him sooner or later. This classical depiction of a woman being the man’s demise is nothing new. In fact, it reaches as far back as the earliest Christianity books when Eve tempted Adam with the forbidden fruit. But even though women have been highly accredited with turning man into beast, there is still very little mention of women werewolves in the history books.

Today, authors such as Patricia Briggs and movies like Eclipse are doing a lot to change the face of women in werewolf folklore. Briggs’ Alpha and Omega novels feature Anna, the Omega werewolf heroine. And it will be in Eclipse that we get to see Leah Clearwater helping Jacob fight off evil vampires. But still, in the Alpha and Omega series, Anna is a somewhat weak werewolf that needs her mate, Charles’, help with much of what she does. And even though Leah Clearwater is tough in her own right, she is still largely portrayed as a whiny annoying girl that won’t leave Jacob alone in the book.

So when are we going to start seeing some tough, kick ass women werewolves? I’m sure that there are a few out there that I’m missing but, when I can’t think of five off the top of my head, that tells me that the world of werewolves definitely needs a little more girl power!

You’re never too old for action figures! So go ahead and get your old and young wolves some to play with. Raaawr! There are loads to choose from too, just pick a movie and chances are there’s an action figure – from A Werewolf in London to Jacob Black.

Hey remember that post I did on the werewolf role-playing game? Well, they made it into a board game. Now you can have pre-made cards and even some extras.

This gift shows to everyone that the wearer loves werewolves so much that they want to display their love right where everyone can see it.

This is another good gift for someone that wants to show off their were-love… just make sure it’s not made of silver. You can get all sorts of items, like this totally kick ass ring, to this rad bracelet or necklace.

The Werewolves In Twilight

Werewolves are getting a big boost in popularity lately and the second Twilight movie, New Moon is on the minds of all. With that in mind, today’s post is of course about the Twilight werewolves. Yay! While most go on and on about the vampires in Twilight, this post will focus on the werewolf parts of the story only.

Warning: Spoilers!!!
Twilight: In this first book we meet the young Jacob Black. Jacob is a teenager living on a Native American reservation at La Push, Washington. He is part of the Quileutes tribe and one of their tribal legends says that they descended from wolves. They say that their ancestors could turn from man to wolf. It is still taboo in the tribe to kill any wolf and vampires are their enemies. Jacob thinks that this is nothing but a silly old story.

New Moon: In this book Jacob learns that the tribal legends are true and he has to come to terms with the fact that he is now a werewolf himself. The first time he shifts was the most terrifying thing he has ever experienced. Luckily the other werewolves in the pack can speak to him telepathically and that helped him through it. This is the book where Bella and Jacob get much closer to one another. Part of the wolf pack’s responsibility is to keep vampires off their land, Bella is nearly killed when the pack kills a vampire that was with her.

Eclipse: In this book the werewolves reluctantly team up with Edward and the rest of his vampire family to defeat a small group of evil vampires that have come to town. Since Jacob loves Bella he wants to do whatever he can to keep her safe. Of course, the evil vampires are destroyed. Throughout the book we learn the Bella loves Jacob too, but not as much as she loves vampire Edward. Poor wolf.

Breaking Dawn: In this book we get a different look into the world of the werewolves since a few chapters are from Jacob Black’s point of view. One big point is when Jacob and the pack learn that Bella is pregnant with Edward’s baby. The fear is that this baby will be a freak and incredibly destructive. The pack then votes to kill the baby and Bella. Jacob obviously disagrees and leaves the pack. He forms a new pack with Leah and her brother in which Jacob is the leader. Jacob is there when Bella’s baby is born and a crazy thing happens, Jacob imprints with the baby (named Renesmee). Imprinting is an involuntary act in which a werewolf bonds with his or her soul mate.

Upcoming Werewolf Movies

Most of this year and next year’s upcoming werewolf features are low-budget drive-in shockers, –but we don’t count that as a bad thing. But a sad, fuzzy part of the inner me does wish that for once, someone would spend big money on some werewolves. Keep your eyes open for these films, coming soon, and if you have some suggestions, feel free to let us know what we’re missing!

Benighted ’09 – Benighted is based on the book by Kit Whitfield, featuring a world of those lucky enough to be born werewolves, and those unlucky enough to be born “bareback” (the book’s alternate title). Those who do not become werewolves maintain and regulate lycanthropic activity. The story follows an agent ordered to defend a werewolf who maimed who best friend. When the friend is murdered before the trial, while the suspect is in custody, things get crazy.

The Wolf Man ’09 – A big budget tribute to the Wolf Man classic of 1940, featuring such big name actors as Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving, and others. If Benicio is the wolf man, then I’ll be first in line. Benicio is sexy, with a capital SEX! According to the rumors floating around, The Wolf Man should be out any time now, and it even features a scene where the werewolf fights a crocodile. Hmm. Sounds fabulous!

The Ghouly Boys ’10 – This film we’re promised, will be for the kids. Based on the comic by the same name, The Ghouly Boys will be produced by the execs in charge of Mandate Pictures, which is responsible for some decent films; so someone professional will be handling the movie. The comic, for non-readers, follows a group of kid-reject friends, one of whom is a werewolf.

New Moon ’09 – God is there anyone who doesn’t know what this is yet? Yeah, okay, Jacob and his 0wolf pack turn into werewolves, coming out of the proverbial fur-lined closet in this film, Jacob and his family of werewolves band together, presumably to protect Bella from those nasty vampires, the Cullens, and their Elders in Europe.

Growl ’11 – I saved the best for last! I hope you made it this far down guys, because Growl is supposed to be the main event! According to the posters, Growl will be coming out in 2011. It follows a secret underground MMA fight club that makes its way around the world, testing their abilities against werewolves. Who would win in a fight to the death, werewolves or MMA pros? Looks like we have to wait a while to find out!
