Saint Hubert, protect us . . .

We all know St. Patrick loves a good drink, and that St. George killed a dragon. Or something. But these two only scratch the surface of the saintly back-catalogue: there are saints for almost every concept you can think of.

There’s a patron saint for just about everything. Think up some obscure cause or problem or occupation or hang-up, something really out there, and then start digging. You’ll find a saint for it, nine times out of ten, no matter how bizarre or silly it is. In this case, werewolves, or, more to the point, protection from werewolves. If you’re ever out wandering the moors some moonlit night, or camping in some shadow-saturated, reputedly haunted stretch of wilderness, and you gaze out into the darkness beyond your campfire to see a pair of gleaming lupine eyes staring back at you, eyes too large to belong to a REGULAR wolf, then you’re gonna want to call on Saint Hubert of Liege.

Ostensibly the patron of hunters and hunting, Hubert was in centuries past assigned by ecclesiastical decree the charge of protecting God’s children against the predation of werewolves. Reading his biography, though, I wonder if he might also be the patron saint of dogcatchers and breeders, forest rangers, even the Cub Scouts, if they HAD a patron saint, which they don’t. Still, Hubert earns his cool stripes, his “geek cred,” for the connection to werewolves, don’tcha think? I want a St. Hubert pendant now.
