Review: WOLFCOP the Comic Book, Issue One

Another comic to review this week! This debut issue of WOLFCOP, a new ongoing series, debuting the same week as PENNY DREADFUL issue three! I’ll take it! How IS this new series, you ask? Let’s start with the artwork, which is fine. No complaints there. Howzabout the story? A good comic must have both good artwork and good storytelling to succeed. I can’t say that writer Max Marks manages to capture the crazy fun spirit of the film, but it’s a fairly solid effort involving a pack of cannibals preying on travelers, led by a shapeshifting giant boar creature. Marks throws in a bit too much of the profanity, though. I have no objections to it on any moral grounds; it’s just that it feels forced, like Marks is adding the cussing just because he can, not because the story requires it. This makes it come off a little sloppy, but it’s not enough to sink the book.

This standalone issue is brought to us by Dynamite Comics, and…wait, what? This book actually came out in fall of last year? Huh? Then how did it end up on the new releases rack at my local comic shop this week? Maybe it got delayed in shipping? Like, REALLY delayed?
