Review: THE HOWLING The Comic Book Issue 1

One of the perks of this gig is that I get to see stuff sometimes before the guy on the street. This past week I got to read the first issue of the new THE HOWLING: REVENGE OF THE WEREWOLF QUEEN comic book series from Space Goat Publishing, and please permit me to give it my highest possible recommendation. You NEED to read this comic. It is written by Micky Neilson, the same guy who authored THE TURNING, one of the finest werewolf novels I’ve ever read; hearing that Mr. Neilson would be handling the story, I had no doubts it would be good, and it is. Really, really good. The comic picks up right where the first movie ended. It is in actuality the sequel to that film that we never got, the sequel we deserved.

Is the “werewolf queen” of this series the same character, Marsha Quist, seen ordering the raw hamburger at the end of the movie, portrayed by actress Elisabeth Brooks? It would appear so. I do hope so. That character has a special place in my heart. I first saw THE HOWLING, the movie, when I was about ten, on a local independent TV station that aired it uncut. (Ah, the 80s!) That nude scene at the campfire, the full frontal one? Kinda jumpstarted my puberty. Sadly Ms. Brooks passed away in 1997 at the far too young age of 46. In the funny books, though, Marsha Quist lives on. Long may she howl!
