Review of Rise of the Wolf by Curtis Jobling

After having countless readers recommend this book to me and after chatting with the wonderful author himself, I simply had to read Rise of the Wolf, the first book in the popular Wereworld series by Curtis Jobling – and I am definitely glad I did.

Geared towards younger readers (although perfectly suitable for older readers), Rise of the Wolf tells the tale of Drew, a 16-year-old who discovers that not only is he a werewolf, but he is rightful heir to the murdered Wolf King’s throne. Set in a medieval fantasy world ruled by Werelords, men and women who can shift at will into animals, Drew must use his wits and newfound powers to survive in a land suddenly full of enemies. Drew’s the only one who can unite the kingdom in a massive uprising against its tyrant ruler, Leopold the Lion. But the king is hot on Drew’s tail and won’t rest until he’s got the rebel wolf’s head.

Rise of the wolf is every boy’s dream, it’s a classic adventure tale with a were-creature twist. You have the young hero saving the day and rescuing the damsel in distress, evil villains and monstrous beasts, haunted forests and magical mayhem. It’s what every young reader could want in a fantasy tale. What makes it unique are the Werelords, the nobles who can turn into animals. I loved that each part of the land is ruled by a different lord – boars, bears, foxes and so on, and that the king of them all is a cruel lion. It’s an excellent adventure story with wonderful characters.

My only issue with Rise of the Wolf is that it’s totally a boy’s book. This is not a book girls or women can relate to, I personally would have liked to see more female empowerment, some stronger female leads. That definitely disappointed me. But all in all Rise of the Wolf is a highly entertaining read packed full of adventure. It’s book I can see many male readers enjoying and one I strongly recommend for those looking for adventure and awesome werewolf action.
