OK—Original Krampus

As in, these are the original designs created by writer-director Michael Dougherty for his onscreen KRAMPUS project, not the Germanic, pre-Christian demonic figure incorporated into Christmas symbology as the years passed. While I love the final design they went with for the creature in the movie—Did you know that Krampus’s bearded, slack-jawed face in the film is actually a mask? A Hannibal Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS or Leatherface in THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE kind of mask, or like that poor chick got plastered to her face in THE DEVIL’S REJECTS. It’s a man’s FACE, the skin and beard of his face, worn as a mask, while the monster’s true visage remains hidden. I have to admit I didn’t pick up on that during my first viewing of the film, but knowing it only adds to the creepy-cool factor.—I would also have loved to have seen one or more of these designs make their way into the picture. Maybe for the sequel. Who is to say that Krampus has to always appear in the same form? Santa Claus is depicted in numerous ways, from the Coca-Cola created look we associate with him today to the traditional Renaissance-esque Father Christmas getup. Why then can we not see more than one take on Krampus in the same movie?

I’m talking about Dougherty’s movie KRAMPUS, in case you haven’t figured that out. A new Christmas tradition in my life, like watching Charlie Brown on TV every December. He’d been working on the idea and the design for the monster for a LONG time. See Dougherty’s designs, as well as some cool ones designed by fans, at his Twitter page. And while you’re there, if you aren’t following werewolves.com and vampires.com, make sure you take care of that, ‘kay?
