In Mexico, don’t go outside if you’re a female…

Mariana is the latest in a growing number of girls and women who have disappeared, or worse, in the populous State of Mexico, which has become the most dangerous region for women in a country that is all too used to violence.

There is something inherently sexual about the image of the werewolf, just as there is something sexual inherent in human—masculine—aggression. Go back to the story of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. This “innocuous” fairy tale practically oozes with perverse sexuality. The Id feeds off the libido, or vice versa. Though inexplicable, as the one drive fuels procreation, thus the continuation of the species, thus the continuation of LIFE, and the other primarily destroys it, sex and violence are forever intertwined. The beast hungers, lusts and hates, and any or all of these motivators is sufficient to prompt it to action.

Women in Mexico are an endangered species. In a country where human life is so cheap and disposable, the simple fact of being female, of possessing anatomical attributes, paints a bullseye on a woman, ANY woman. The streets aren’t safe, and the wolves, though clad in different raiment, are no less hungry, angry, lustful, or deadly. Can you imagine living your life this way? Can you imagine living in a place in the world where you are marked for predation simply because you were unlucky enough to be born a female?
