Fiona Apple’s ‘Werewolf’

Heartbreaking songstress Fiona Apple recently came out with a new album with the ridiculously long title of The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. Why is this noteworthy? Because, on the album she has a song called Werewolf. Since the moment this song was released I have had people tell me all about it nonstop. So here you all go – an entire post dedicated to Fiona Apple’s Werewolf. Enjoy my wonderful readers…

You can listen to the song and read the lyrics below:

I could liken you to a werewolf the way you left me for dead
But I admit that I provided a full moon
And I could liken you to a shark the way you bit off my head
But then again I was waving around a bleeding, open wound

But you were such a super guy ’til the second you get a whiff of me
We are like a wishing well and a bolt of electricity
But we can still support each other, all we gotta do’s avoid each other
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key

The lava of the volcano shot up hot from under the sea
One thing leads to another and you made an island of me
And I could liken you to a chemical the way you made me compound a compound
But I’m a chemical, too, inevitable you and me would mix
And I could liken you to a lot of things but I always come around
‘Cause in the end I’m a sensible girl, I know the fiction of the fix

But you were such a super guy ’til the second you get a whiff of me
We are like a wishing well and a bolt of electricity
But we can still support each other, all we gotta do’s avoid each other
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key
Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor key

The song isn’t about werewolves and it only mentions them in two lines, but apparently this is a new favorite among werewolf fans.

What do you think of the song? You can buy the album here.

  1. Well if this is a “favorite among werewolf fans” its obvious they dint listen to the song and judged it solely on the title. This song is not only wrote very bad,but it sounds like complete garbage. And i really hate pop culture latching on to this stupid new term “Lycan” created by Underworld for werewolves. Most of all I hate people that watched that stupid movie and decided to to base werewolf culture on it. The only thing good about those movies are the wolves….

    1. That was a random rant. And for the record, “lycan” is not a new word, it did not come from Underworld. Lycanthrope has been used since the 1500s, it was a very common word once. so no, Underworld did not create this new term, it has been around for hundreds of years.

      1. Lycan is in someways an even better term than werewolf for someone suffering from the curse of Lycanthropy however its origin is very ironic. The origin of Lycanthrope as I am sure you are aware was from the Greek myth of Lycoan. He was a horrible Greek king and when Zeus heard of him Zeus visited Lycoan and after announcing his presence Lycoan who didn’t believe him to be a god demanded a test to prove himself, Lycoan then served Zeus human flesh consisting of either the flesh of a messenger, his son, or nephew depending on the version. It was at this point that Zeus turned Lycoan and his court into wolves. Lycoan is believed to be the father of werewolves, there has not been a story since with a comparable father of werewolves figure that I am aware of. I would say that in the current cultural understanding of werewolves Lycan is actually a better term than werewolf because the person who becomes a werewolf rarely wants and enjoys the curse however in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries werewolves had a much different connotation. A werewolf was someone who was a serial murderer, killing and then usually eating humans generally young children. Especially during the French Werewolf Scare of the late fifteen hundreds and ending with the Jean Grenier trial of 1603. At the time a man or woman chose to be a werewolf because they were generally witches or sorcerers and used black magic or the help of the devil to become such monsters. Using the origin of the term it is therefore a more plausible term today than it was in the time when it was first used, also it was used not as the name of the werewolves like today but rather as the name of a madness in which a person believed they were a wolf. Words change over the course of time and lycanthrope is a perfect example, originally a condition of thinking one is a wolf. It is now the condition of one being a wolf.
I will however say this, the song is quite bad and if people are suggesting this song as the newest addition to werewolf musicology they probably don’t know much about other wolf songs nor listened to this, or they are simply fan girls/boys of Fiona Apple and don’t care about quality, relevance, or anyone’s opinion.
I do apologize for the long post and I am sure it will just sound like a really odd rant.
