A while back I asked you, my wonderful readers, who you would like for me to interview and after hearing an assortment of requests I got down to tracking down those interviews for you. And guess what?! Just as you asked, I got an interview with S. Andrew Swann, author of the Wolfbreed series! Hurray! If you have any more interview requests head over HERE and let me know, I’ll do my best to get them for you. Until then, enjoy this interview with S. Andrew Swann!

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’ve been writing novels for 18 years, and I’ve tried my hand at many genres, primarily SF/Fantasy.  I also have a day job working as a database manager for a child services agency in Cleveland.  I’m married and have way too many animals. (Last count, three cats, two dogs, two goats and a horse.)

Can you tell us about the Wolfbreed Series?
The basic premise is that in the 13th Century, just as the militant religious order of the Teutonic Knights were just beginning a Northern Crusade to end the last vestige of Paganism in Europe, one of these Knights comes across a litter of infant werewolves.  The werewolves are raised to be tools of the order’s conquest in Prussia.  Of course, things don’t go quite as planned.

How does your series differ from other novels about werewolves?
The primary difference is the setting.  Eastern Europe during the Northern Crusade isn’t used much as a setting for any fiction in English, much less fiction about werewolves.  Also, the historical setting seems to suit them.  I also think that often werewolf-as-protagonist stories often downplay some of the more monstrous qualities. . .  I don’t.

Where did you get the idea for the Wolfbreed Series?
Without being spoilery, I am a bit of an Anime fan and a few years ago I saw one series in particular that made a significant impact on me. (If you’re curious, I do mention which one in the acknowledgments of WOLFBREED.)  I combined the plot elements I was interested in with an interest in medieval history.

You write about a vast assortment of topics, what do you love most about writing about werewolves?
The nice thing about werewolves is they bring a lot to the table already.  There are all sorts of mythic, metaphorical, and pop-culture connotations that accompany them into the story.  It can provide for a lot of resonance within the story.

Ok, here’s a question I ask all folks I interview: I’ve noticed that most of the authors I follow on Twitter talk about the music they’re currently writing to. What kind of setting/atmosphere do you find most conducive to your writing?
I generally have my iPod on shuffle with (mostly) alternative stuff from the 90s mixed with a bunch of other stuff ranging from Bob Dylan to the Birthday Massacre.

If werewolves were discovered to exist today, do you think our society would accept them or try to destroy them?
Depends on how many people they’re eating.

Who is your favorite fictitious werewolf (other than your own)?
I’m partial to Kitty Norville.

What is your favorite werewolf book/movie/show?
American Werewolf in London.

Tell our readers why they should check out your book – in 3 words: (bwahaha)
Crusaders and Werewolves!

And finally, what other projects are you currently working on? Any goodies we should watch out for?
I’m working on a lot of things right now, so I don’t have any idea what will be out next.  You can keep an eye on my website for news: www.sandrewswann.com.
