Cannibals G(al)ore!

Lots of cannibalism in the werewolf news this week. First I must report on Ocasr-winner Anthony Hopkins’s regrets about reprising the role of Hannibal Lecter after the success of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, then I chance upon this juicy little tidbit. (And yes, I am aware that using a phrase like “juicy little tidbit” might not be the most sensitive choice I could make, considering the subject matter. But seldom have I been accused of too much sensitivity in my writing.) On to the story, then: This linked article chronicles more than reviews the book FLYBOYS, written by James Bradley. As Bradley’s father was one of those Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima in that famous photograph (and later statue), he has a tangential genealogical connection to the story of the nine pilots who were shot down by the Japanese during bombing raids in the Autumn of 1944. Among the nine was future President George H.W. Bush. The elder Bush was the only one to escape capture.

What happened to the other eight is the stuff of nightmares. They were tortured before being hacked or stabbed to death, and then there flesh was methodically rendered and served up as a meal to the Japanese officers stationed on the island where the men were captured. This isn’t a case of cannibalism due to hardship. Those soldiers weren’t starving. They even had soy sauce to flavor their human flesh!
