Are there “bad seeds,” or is it bad DIRT?

Are evil people born or made?

Is it Nature or Nurture? Is human personality determined by genetics or experiences? This is a question scientists have been asking for some time now; since the discovery of DNA, certainly, though in truth long before it. Our ancestors witnessed the behavior of an offspring mirror the behavior of its father and mother, or else stand in stark contrast to it, and wondered how the child could be so different, or else nodded in affirmation at the proverbial apple landing so close to the tree from which it sprouted. Is it possible for a child to simply be “born bad?” Is it possible that some are predestined for evil, no matter what the circumstances of their lives, no matter how much love, attention, and care they are provided? Or are we born as blank slates, and our external experiences shape our natures as they develop? Is evil a learned trait?

We’re a little closer to the answer to that question these days. The latest research suggests that both genetics AND external factors are necessary for the creation of a sociopathic mind, a mind with no ability to experience empathy. No conscience, in other words. Or, to use just ONE word, Evil. HOW it happens, though, remains a mystery.
