All Hallow’s Read Has Returned!

October 12th, 2011 § 0

All Hallow’s Read, a day where you give a loved one a horror book in celebration of Halloween, was created last year by horror author Neil Gaiman. A year ago All Hallow’s Read was still a new idea, just something Gaiman happened to mention on his Twitter one day, but since then this spectacular day has gathered quite a following and now it even has its own website.

Being the Halloween-lovin’ bibliophile I am, All Hollow’s Read makes me all kinds of happy, so of course I have to give this very special tradition some love here on Werewolves.com.

Here’s more info on All Hallow’s Read from the official website:

So what is All Hallow’s Read?
All Hallow’s Read is a Hallowe’en tradition. It’s simply that in the week of Hallowe’en, or on the night itself, you give someone a scary book.

Is this instead of Trick or Treat? Because I don’t want to get egged, and the kids around here are mean.
Not at all. Trick or Treat is Trick or Treat. This is All Hallow’s Read, a great excuse to give someone a book.

You can give out scary books or comics to trick or treaters on Hallowe’en if you want to, obviously. (We recommend looking the child in the eye and saying, “Take it. Read it. Trust me… around here… a book can be… safer than candy.” Then chuckling to yourself, as if remembering something unfortunate that happened to some of the local children only last year.)

Haha! I love All Hallow’s Read! In honor of of this fantastic tradition, here are just a few spooky werewolf book recommendations for all ages. There are many chilling werewolf books out there, these are just a start. Please feel free to leave a recommendation in a comment below. The more the better!

Children:

The House That Drac Built by Judy Sierra and Will Hillenbrand
One by one, a bat, a cat, a werewolf, a monster, a mummy, a zombie, and other frightful creatures emerge in the dark house. They chase, wrestle, and roar–until the doorbell rings and in walks a group of fearless trick-or-treaters who know exactly what to do

Werewolf of Fever Swamp by R. L. Stine
You can’t go wrong with a classic Goosebumps book. In this book something weird happening in Fever Swamp. Something really horrible. It started with the strange howling at night. Then there was the rabbit, torn to shreds. Everyone thinks Grady’s new dog is responsible. After all, he looks just like a wolf. And he seems a little on the wild side. But Grady knows his dog is just a regular old dog. And most dogs don’t howl at the moon. Or disappear at midnight. Or change into terrifying creatures when the moon is full. Or do they?

Young Adult:

Wereling by Steve Feasey
Fourteen-year-old Trey Laporte is not a kid anymore. Not after the day he wakes up in agony—retina-splitting, vomit-inducing agony. His clothes are torn. His room is trashed. Enter Lucien Charron, the mysterious, long-lost “uncle” with freakish fire-flecked eyes and skin that blisters in the sun. Suddenly, Trey finds himself living in a luxury penthouse at the heart of a strange and sinister empire built on the powers of the Netherworld—vampires, demons, sorcerers, and djinn.  Trey is training night and day to control the newly discovered power lurking inside him. Now, demons are closing in on every side, and the most psychopathic bloodsucker to rock the Netherworld wants to destroy him. Above all, he  must face one terrifying question: Is he a boy . . . or is he a beast?

Red Moon Rising by Peter Moore
Being only half-vamp in a high school like Carpathia Night makes you a whole loser. But Danny Gray manages to escape the worst of the specists at his school. Thanks to genetic treatments he had as an infant, most people assume Danny’s other half is human. Which is a good thing. Ever since the development of synthetic blood – SynHeme – vamps have become society’s elite, while wulves like his father work menial jobs and live in bad neighborhoods.  Wulves are less than second class citizens; once a month they become inmates, forced to undergo their Change in dangerous government compounds. For Danny, living with his vamp mother and going to a school with a nearly all-vamp student body, it’s best to pretend his wulf half doesn’t even exist.  But lately Danny’s been having some weird symptoms — fantastic night vision; a keener-than-usual sense of smell; and headaches, right around the full moon. Even though it’s easy to be in denial, it’s hard to ignore evidence.  There’s only a month until the next few moon, and Danny’s time is running out.

Adult:

Dog World by Jason McKinney
A fantastic horror novel about werewolves taking over the world! I love this book! You can read my review for it here.

Ravenous by Ray Garton
Werewolves have come to Big Rock, California and their curse, it turns out is transmitted through sex, not blood. Sheriff Arlin Hurley resisted the idea of werewolves but when faced with proof, he sets out to hunt down the killers. Unfortunately, as bad as the legends were, the truth about werewolves is far worse.

And those are few recommendations to get you started. Happy All Hallow’s Read!
